The Long Island 9/11 Memorial is an organization committed to honoring and remembering the 456 Long Islanders that perished in the attacks on 9/11. They hold an annual memorial service to honor those Long Islanders. It includes a color guard, choir, and reading of the names. Their long terms plans encompass building a memorial which will include a Resource Learning Center.
The Long Island 9/11 Memorial is hoped to be a welcoming site for reflection and contemplation for all those that visit. The Resource Learning Center will provide an educational resource for the public, as well as address the needs of the victims and rescue workers. Besides New York City, Long Island was the most deeply effected region of the September 11th attacks. The site will, as well as being a site of remembrance, preserve the stories of heroism and sacrifice that occurred as a result of the attacks.
The memorial will include walkways, gardens, and personal areas set apart for contemplation, as well as private gardens for police and fire rescue personnel. The center will be a twelve foot monolith of steel recovered from the debris of the at Ground Zero. Adjacent to the memorial will be the Resource Learning Center. It will feature both temporary and permanent exhibits, as well as a library of print and audio-visual media, meeting rooms, and classrooms. The memorial will keep the memory of 9/11 alive for generations to come.
Rudolph Migliore serves as general council to the Long Island 9/11 memorial, as well as being involved in the committee since its inception. The memorial has received great support from the community, as well as the local press. Many local business and political leaders have already donated to the project. If things go as planned, Long Island will have a great place to remember these attacks and honor the people those Long Islanders that perished in them.
